[Review and Swatch] Buxom Wildly Whipped Lightweight Liquid Lipstick in Centerfold

The Buxom Wildly Whipped Soft Matte Lip Color is a very polarizing product; you're either going to love it or hate it depending on your personal preferences for lip color formulas. My own opinion on the product falls somewhere in between. I can see why other people might like this, but for me, it's another dud. It's not exactly a bad product, it's just not one of my favorite formulas. But first, let's get something out of the way because this damn song gets stuck in my head every time I see the name of this shade, 'Centerfold':

"My blood runs cold, my memory has just been sold, my angel is the centerfold, angel is the centerfold..."

So, now that it's stuck in your head too, let's continue on to the review...

Let's start with the packaging, which I love. I think it's very attractive and sleek, but more importantly, it's functional. Unlike the Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint, this packaging doesn't leak any oil. The packaging closes securely, and the tube is made from thick, sturdy plastic. The interior of the tube is the perfect size to remove the excess from the applicator, and the packaging doesn't get messy easily from fingerprints or opening and closing the tube. The applicator is a long, slanted, flocked doe foot with a bit of flexibility and a narrow tip, which makes it easy to get a precise application.

The lipstick truly is a very whipped, creamy formula. It spreads easily and provides a lightweight, even coverage. Upon initial application, it feels very comfortable on the lips, very similar to a silky lip gloss without any of the stickiness. I think the overall texture and finish of the product is comparable to the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Creams and the Tarte Tarteist Lip Paints, but the Buxom Wildly Whipped feels even smoother than either of those products. Similar to both of those products, the Buxom Wildly Whipped Soft Matte Lip Color isn't matte in the way that most liquid lipsticks are matte, nor does it dry down like a typical liquid lipstick. As such, it transfers easily, though not as easily as the Tarte Lip Paint. The Buxom Wildly Whipped is less matte than the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Creams, but slightly more drying and fades more quickly. The scent is sweet, something along the lines of caramel or cake batter. It's not very strong, and I actually really like it since it doesn't smell overly synthetic. However, you might find the smell offensive if you're sensitive to smells or just don't like your lip products to have a sweet scent. I didn't smell it at all while I was wearing it, but it was noticeable while I was applying it.

Centerfold is a light mauve. It actually has an extremely subtle microshimmer in it, which gives it a bit of dimension. The microshimmer shows up in swatches, but it's not noticeable on the lips. It did cling to my dry patches a tiny bit, but nowhere near as badly as the Tarte Lip Paint did. I didn't notice any plumping effects at all. As far as the application and appearance of the product, I was actually pretty happy with it. However, I think one of the major flaws of this product is the confusion over what exactly the product is supposed to be. In product listings, it's called a 'Lightweight Liquid Lipstick,' which I think may give people the impression that it's a liquid to matte product that dries down and is resistant to transfer. As I've already mentioned, it does neither of those things. On the packaging itself, it's called a "Soft Matte Lip Color," and the description for the product also describes it as a soft matte, which I think is more fitting. Many people probably wouldn't consider the initial application to be matte, but it does get progressively more matte as it wears away. The wear time is, unfortunately, pretty crappy.

The bit of glossiness wore away after about 30 minutes. After 3 hours without eating or drinking anything, this is what it looked like:

Yeah, not pretty. It's very faded, but there's still a bit of product clinging to dry patches and giving me an awkward lip line. At first I thought it was the product itself drying my lips out, but when I looked in the mirror, I realized my lips felt dry because the product had mostly worn away. If I'd had anything to eat or drink, I would find this acceptable, though not favorable. However, all I did was run a few errands, and I didn't have so much as a sip of water. I get longer wear time out of a standard lipstick, so for me, there's really no point to this product. It's not matte enough to really be a part of the matte lipstick trend, and it's not long-wearing enough to compete with any of my other lipsticks. It does feel nice on the lips, so I'll give it points for that. I don't hate it, and I will wear it again at some point, but I definitely won't be buying any more of these.

Final Thoughts:

You'll like this if...

• You just want a lip product that feels comfortable on the lips
• You don't care about the wear time or are willing to sacrifice it for comfort
• You don't want something completely matte or glossy
• You don't mind your lipstick transferring onto cups, people, etc.

Avoid this if...

• You prefer a liquid to matte lipstick
• You need or want a product that is long-wearing and transfer-proof or transfer-resistant
• You don't like sweet-scented lip products

Alternatively, if this product appealed to you, you may also be interested in the Tarte Tarteist Lip Paint or the Maybelline Vivid Matte Lipstick. I personally didn't enjoy either of those formulas, but if you like the sound of the Buxom Wildly Whipped, you might. If I were to rank all of the products I've mentioned in this post, my top pick would be the Nyx Soft Matte Lip Creams, followed by the Buxom Wildly Whipped, then the Tarte Lip Paint, and finally the Maybelline Vivid Matte.
